Take me to the sea
After gathering and storing small pieces of driftwood from locally sourced beaches and harbours in South West Cornwall I like to produce these small hanging devices with macramé craft rope with fisherman's or half hitch knots tied at each end. I pyrograph a beach, nautical term or sea related slogan directly on to the wood at high temperature. All the driftwood has been previously bleached in a large bleaching tank for two days and is then rinsed and left to dry naturally on decorators sheets before applying linseed oil or varnish to seal the fibres of the wood.
I prefer to keep the driftwood pieces as natural as possible, so I only sand down any areas that have rough edges before drilling a small holes for the hanging loop. Any larger pieces of similar wood, along with certain types of seaweed end up as driftwood trees.
