Rustic nameplate
A name plate or door plate, serves the functional purpose of identifying a house. However, a name plate can also serve as a décor element, which reflects the home owner's style sensibilities. I often use random pieces driftwood with nautical features and after gathering and storing large pieces of driftwood from locally sourced beaches and harbours or from house clearances in South West Cornwall I produce personalised house name plates, either with nautical rope fixings where appropriate or with a wall fixing plate. I have also made up signs and nameplates from different types of wood depending on the commisssion. I pyrograph the house, building name or slogan directly on to the wood at high temperature. Driftwood pieces are bleached in a large bleaching tank for two days and is then rinsed and left to dry naturally on decorators sheets before applying linseed oil or varnish to seal the fibres of the wood. Any other sourced wood is sanded and treated for restoration projects.
I prefer to keep the driftwood pieces as natural as possible, so I only sand down any areas that have rough edges, maintaining the natural look and feel of the fibres before applying the fixings.
