A customised pencil shape
An individual and personlised piece of driftwood carved and painted to the shape of a pencil with your personal choice of name or message on one side, with two removable brass eyelets and a piece of macramé rope tied at both ends with half hitch knots for use as a hanging device. The design is reminiscent of the old HB pencils I used while at school with a small pink eraser on one end, which often iued to break off!
The sizes and shapes of the driftwood components will vary in width and height depending upon how many unique pieces I find on any particular day. After a storm is often the best time to search above the high tide line! The weight of each item will also vary but will nornally be between 30 to 50 grams.
I will draw the lettering of your name or message by hand first using an HB or 2B pencil to create unique characters and when I am happy with the design, it is then refined, scanned and then re-traced and vectorised in Adobe Illustrator. This is then traced on to the driftwood using carbon paper to create an exact copy. I will then pyrograph at a high temperature to burn the hand drawn script on to the timber, although I will also use acrylic paint or waterproof markers, depending on the character count. All the driftwood pieces featured in the product list were found on or around beaches and harbours around South West Cornwall, sometimes washed up amongst seaweed and debris on the shoreline. The wood itself has been bleached in a large bleaching tank for two days. It is then rinsed and left to dry naturally before sanded to soften any rough edges. Two coats of exterior varnish are then applied to seal the design.
