Hand made Driftwood Mirror

A hand crafted Cornish driftwood mirror made with seperately sourced pieces of driftwood from different beaches for a client in South West Cornwall.

hand made driftwood mirror

I was lucky enough to find a circular mirror in a second hand store, so stripped the old frame and built this Driftwood Mirror. All the driftwood was locally sourced, bleached and then dried. I used two pieces of rope found wedged between rocks at Hendra Beach, Praa Sands and whipped the edges for a nice finish. The mirror now hangs in their dining room!

Personalised House Nameplate

A personalised house nameplate for a family in Frimley Green, Surrey

I was supplied with what looked like an old bread board for this personalised house name plate for a family home in Frimley Green, Surrey. I stripped the old varnish from both sides, lighlty sanded the original wood surface and then pyrographed the lettering from my original hand drawn calligraphy. This was traced on to the wooden surface with carbon backed paper after the sketch was scanned and then vectorised in Adobe Illustrator. I then applied four coats of exterior varnish for protection against the elements.

Driftwood Tree

A hand made Driftwood Tree assembled from random pieces of driftwood from various beaches in South West Cornwall, for a family in Godolphin Cross.

All the driftwood samples used in these trees are bleached in a tank for two days, then allowed to dry. I then file down and sand any rough edges,  take a wooden block spacer from old wooden crates that are washed up on the beach and use these as the base. They are a good choice as they support the trees but are not too heavy to send through the post! I drill a hole through the centre of the base, insert a piece of 6mm dowling and then drill though the centre of the driftwood 'branches' and slide them on to the doweling 'trunk'. The whole project is 100% natural, although if the trees are to be displayed outdoors, I apply weatherproof varnish to all the components. The finishing touch is affixing a champagne cork to the top of the tree for celebration!
